"These RCA Living Stereos from producer Richard Mohr and engineer Lewis Layton are both sonic and artistic gems, and have long been audiophile icons. The RCA team of Mohr and Layton captured the warmly rich, spacious sonics of early Living Stereos principally in two great venues: Boston's Symphony Hall and Orchestra Hall in Chicago. These five recordings represent well the sound of the Boston Symphony at its recorded best." CLICK HERE to see more of this Review by Wayne Donnelly at Enjoy The Music.com

Ruth Draper was an internationally famous monologist who charmed audiences all over the world with her repertoire of some sixty sketches of assorted characters. Using no scenery, no props, and an occasional shawl or wrap she was able to people the stage with a great variety of personalities and move her audiences to laughter and tears.
Finally when she was 70, and on the plea that her work not be lost entirely, it was arranged for her to record for RCA in New York. During 1954 and 1955 she had nine recording sessions with RCA Producer Richard Mohr in charge. "She was so tiny and was a thousand people! I was most of all impressed by her quality as such a great lady and also as a great artist. One does not often find this combination."
A warm-up session was not something Ruth Draper ever needed, and she had barely begun when those in the control room knew all was well and threw the switch. She was tricked once but not again, and the other sessions went well with a row of microphones added to give her more mobility.
Excerpted from "The Letters of Ruth Draper?"
edited by Dorothy Warren, published in paperback by Southern Illinois University
While researching an article about Ruth Draper that appeared in the November 1999 issue of Vanity Fair writer and editor Susan Mulcahy learned that Draper's recordings had gone out of print. Mulcahy decided to produce the first CD compilation of Draper's recordings (Ruth Draper and Her Company of Characters: Selected Monologues), containing seven of Draper's sketches, and began distributing it in October of 2000 through her company, Acme Content Company, in Seattle. She also produced the second compact disc compilation (More Selected Monologues), containing ten of Draper's pieces. It too is distributed by Acme Content.
